A Report by CYS Global Remit Network Admin Support Team
Apple just had a massive week. They refreshed almost their entire computer lineup — and introduced something brand new: the MacBook Neo, their most affordable laptop ever.
If you're at Orchard Road's Apple Store wondering which device makes sense for you, here's our no-nonsense recommendation depending on who you are.
MacBook Neo — From S$799
Best for: University and polytechnic students, first-time Mac buyers, and anyone upgrading from a budget Windows laptop.
The MacBook Neo is the first Mac that genuinely competes with the Chromebooks and budget Lenovos popular in local schools. It's light enough for MRT commutes, and the battery lasts a full day of lectures.
Watch out for:
Multitasking with many apps open
Heavy creative work such as video editing
Anyone who needs more than two ports without buying a hub
The base model also lacks Touch ID — which feels like an oversight at this price point.
iPad Air M4 — From S$899
Best for: Students who handwrite notes with Apple Pencil, freelancers working from cafés, and anyone who wants one device for both work and entertainment.
Think of the iPad Air M4 as a slightly higher-RAM, lower-storage version of the MacBook Neo — but in tablet format. You can pair it with a Magic Keyboard Folio and other accessories to approximate a laptop setup, but at that point, the MacBook Air M5 is the better investment.
Watch out for:
iPadOS still doesn't support many professional Mac apps
File management can feel clunky compared to macOS
Mac Mini M4 — From S$899
Best for: Home office workers, freelancers with a dedicated desk setup, and small business owners who want serious power without paying laptop prices.
The Mac Mini punches well above its weight. It has a tiny footprint, runs silently, and stays cool — perfect for study rooms where space is tight. At this price point, the specs are a genuine win, and it makes a great foundation for a home PC setup.
Watch out for:
This is a desktop — it stays on your desk
You'll need to budget separately for a monitor, keyboard, and mouse
MacBook Air M5 — From S$1,499
Best for: Working professionals, university students, entrepreneurs, and anyone who wants a laptop that handles everything and lasts all day.
This is your one-size-fits-all, all-purpose everyday machine. With up to 18 hours of real-world battery life, it's hard to argue against the Air M5 as the default recommendation for most people.
Watch out for:
Heavy sustained workloads such as 4K video rendering or running large AI models locally
The fanless design means it can throttle under prolonged stress
MacBook Pro M5 — From S$2,299
Best for: Video editors, architects, engineers, software developers, and content creators who use their computer to earn a living.
Singapore's growing creative and tech industry will find the Pro genuinely earns its keep. The 24-hour battery holds up even through long, demanding work sessions — impressively so.
Watch out for:
Casual users who primarily browse, stream, and email — you'd be paying a S$800+ premium over the Air for power you'll rarely use
Daily commuters — the Pro is notably heavy with a full bag
Prices reflect Singapore Apple Store RRP at time of writing.
