Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference unveiled iOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, a brand-new Siri, and a wave of AI-powered features. Here's a plain-English guide to what's worth paying attention to.

The Headline: Siri Gets a Serious Upgrade

For years, Siri was the butt of voice assistant jokes. That era may finally be ending. At WWDC 2026, Apple unveiled Siri AI — an entirely rebuilt version of its assistant that is, by Apple's own description, 'profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable.'

Siri AI now has a dedicated app, integrates with the Dynamic Island on iPhone, and supports genuine conversational back-and-forth rather than single-command interactions. You can ask it questions, generate text and images, analyse files, and have it take actions across multiple apps in sequence. It can even pull context from other apps mid-call — so if someone calls to confirm a meeting, Siri can check your calendar and Mail without you lifting a finger.

Apple developed the next generation of Apple Foundation Models underlying Siri AI in collaboration with Google and the Gemini family of models — a notable acknowledgement that even Apple's AI ambitions benefit from external partnerships.

Device Compatibility Note The full Siri AI experience — including expressive voices and advanced dictation — requires at least 12GB of unified memory. On iPhone, this limits certain features to the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The standard iPhone 17 misses out.

macOS Golden Gate: Speed Over Flash

macOS 27 is named Golden Gate, and Apple positioned it firmly as a performance-first release — a deliberate callback to Mac OS X Snow Leopard in 2009, which prioritised refinement over new features. macOS Golden Gate promises quicker AirDrop transfers, faster network file browsing, improved syncing in Messages, better Spotlight search suggestions, and an overall system feel that Apple says is 'more responsive than ever.'

For Mac users who felt that recent releases prioritised aesthetics over reliability, this is welcome news. Under-the-hood improvements often have more impact on day-to-day usability than headline features.

iOS 27: More Than Just Siri

Alongside the Siri overhaul, iOS 27 brings meaningful improvements across several core apps:

• Search rebuilt from scratch: Spotlight, Mail, and Photos all benefit from a completely rebuilt search engine that indexes files 'almost immediately' and is more stable and accurate

• Apple Maps gets Flyover improvements, alongside visual and navigation upgrades 

• Apple Wallet and Apple Music both receive feature updates

• New CarPlay capabilities, including video apps support

• iPhone 11 and later are all eligible — making iOS 27 available to more users than any previous iOS release

Parental Controls: A Major Focus

Governments around the world have been pressing tech companies on child online safety, and Apple responded with a comprehensive overhaul of parental controls in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. Parents and guardians can now set up mandatory child accounts for under-13s (and optionally up to 18), with age-tailored safeguards applied across the system.

Key features include:

• Children can request permission to visit websites or download blocked apps directly from within Safari or the App Store

• Granular app time limits with better usage visibility through a redesigned Screen Time

• Apple Watch setup for children without their own iPhone

• 'Ask to Buy' set as default for in-app purchases for children under 13

Liquid Glass Design: Your Call

Last year's Liquid Glass design overhaul was controversial. iOS 27 doesn't abandon it, but it gives you more control — you can dial back the glass effect if you prefer a more understated look, or lean into it if you like the aesthetic. A new layered approach to Liquid Glass within apps adds visual depth while remaining customisable.

When Can You Get It?

iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, and tvOS 27 will all arrive in autumn 2026 — typically alongside the new iPhone launch in September. Developer betas are available now for those who want an early look.
