Is Your Home Wi-Fi Actually Secure? The Settings Most People Never Check

Most people set up their home router once and never touch it again. But an unsecured or poorly configured Wi-Fi network is one of the most common entry points for cyber threats. A few simple changes can make a significant difference.


Why Your Router Matters More Than You Think

Your Wi-Fi router is the gateway through which every device in your home — phones, laptops, smart TVs, and IoT devices — connects to the internet. It is also the first line of defence between your devices and the wider internet. An unsecured router can allow attackers to intercept your traffic, access devices on your network, or use your connection for malicious purposes.


The good news is that securing your home network does not require technical expertise. The settings that matter most are accessible through your router's admin panel — usually reached by typing your router's IP address (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) into a web browser.


Change the Default Admin Password Immediately

Every router comes with a default administrator username and password — and these are publicly documented. If you have never changed your router's admin credentials, anyone who connects to your network (or attempts to connect from outside) can potentially access your router's settings.


Log into your router's admin panel and change the administrator password to something strong and unique. This is different from your Wi-Fi password — it controls access to the router's configuration itself.


Use WPA3 Encryption (or at Least WPA2)

The encryption standard your Wi-Fi network uses determines how difficult it is for someone nearby to intercept your wireless traffic. The current recommended standard is WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 3), which is supported by most routers and devices released after 2019. If your router only supports WPA2, this remains acceptable — but you should avoid WEP or WPA (the older standards), as these have known vulnerabilities.


Check your Wi-Fi security settings in the router admin panel under 'Wireless Security' or similar. Select WPA3 if available, or WPA2-AES as your minimum.


CSA Recommendation

The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore advises using WPA3 encryption for home and office Wi-Fi networks.


WEP and WPA should be disabled — they can be cracked by attackers within minutes using widely available tools.


Set Up a Guest Network

A guest network is a separate Wi-Fi network — typically with its own SSID and password — that connects to the internet but is isolated from your main home network. This is particularly valuable for two scenarios:


  • Visitors: When guests connect to your guest network, they get internet access without being able to see or access devices on your main network (your NAS drive, printer, smart home hub, or other devices)

  • Smart home and IoT devices: Smart speakers, cameras, thermostats, and other connected devices are often less frequently updated and may carry security vulnerabilities. Isolating them on a separate network limits the damage if any one device is compromised


Most modern routers support guest networks — look for the option in your wireless settings.


Keep Your Router Firmware Updated

Router manufacturers periodically release firmware updates to patch security vulnerabilities and improve performance. Unlike your phone or laptop, routers rarely update themselves automatically. Check your router admin panel for a firmware update option, and look for updates at least once a year — or more frequently if your router's manufacturer announces a security patch.


Some newer routers, particularly Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E models, include automatic update features. Enabling these ensures you receive security patches without manual intervention.


Consider Upgrading If Your Router Is Over Four Years Old

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) routers, which became mainstream around 2020, offer significantly better performance and security over older Wi-Fi 5 models — particularly in homes with many connected devices. Wi-Fi 6E extends this into the 6GHz band for even faster speeds and less congestion. If your router is more than four years old, an upgrade is likely to improve both security and performance.


Modern routers from reputable manufacturers (ASUS, TP-Link, Netgear, and others) typically start from around S$100 and offer significant improvements in coverage, speed, and security over older models.
