The Power of a Smile: Dementia SG Offers a New Perspective on Awareness

A Report by CYS Global Remit Digital Media Marketing Team

Last Tuesday afternoon, our bustling CYS Global Remit office experienced something different. The usual hum of monitors and clatter of keyboards gave way to a more reflective atmosphere.

As part of this quarter's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, we collaborated with Dementia Singapore to raise awareness about dementia and promote compassionate engagement. They brought not just a presentation, but an opportunity to gain perspective. Instead of corporate slides, they shared stories, truths, and the experiences of two brave families who offered a window into life with dementia – as both patients and caregivers.

Suddenly, awareness turned personal.

“You don’t have to do much. Just smile.”

This simple yet profound advice from a caregiver reminded us that support doesn’t require grand gestures. "You don’t have to fix anything. Just smile. Just be there."

The impact of this message was palpable. We arrived expecting to jot down notes but found ourselves truly listening. They shared insights into early dementia signs, different types, and how treatment often extends beyond medication to moments filled with joy, familiarity, and trust.

Misconceptions were also addressed. Dementia isn't just about forgetting birthdays or misplacing keys, nor is it solely an issue for the elderly or frail. We left stereotypes at the door.

One significant learning? The term "caregiver" doesn't fully capture the essence of their role. Families prefer "care partner," reflecting dignity, mutuality, and a shared journey. It’s not just about providing care but walking alongside each other.

From Lecture Room to Living Room

The session felt anything but formal. There were questions, laughter, and moments of silence that spoke volumes. Discussions included recognizing subtle changes, speaking slowly rather than loudly, and ensuring dignity remains even when memories fade.

This wasn’t just a training session but felt like an intimate conversation, real and heartfelt.

Prepare to Walk, Not Just Talk

The talk served as a prelude to our upcoming CSR event on 31st May, where we will join dementia patients from Dementia SG for a walk and lunch at the Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay.

This isn’t merely a befriender outing. It’s an opportunity to literally "walk the talk", understanding the profound impact of a few hours and a bit of kindness on someone navigating dementia.

Until Then…

There’s no app for compassion, but conversations like ours on 6th May come close.

To our friends at Dementia SG and the families who opened their hearts – thank you. You’ve reshaped our understanding of the world.

We look forward to seeing you on the 31st. And this time, we’ll bring our smiles.
