A Report by CYS Global Remit Office Facilities Management Unit
Recreating the comforting flavours of Jack's Place in the CYS office kitchen is more than a culinary activity — it is an experience that brings people together.
Known as one of Singapore's most enduring Western-style restaurants, Jack's Place traces its origins to 1966, when founder Say Lip Hai partnered with Britishman Jack Hunt to establish what would become a beloved household name. Over the decades, the brand grew from a humble pub kitchen into a heritage steakhouse recognised for its hearty meals and iconic green-and-white checkered identity.
A Dish Worth Recreating
Among Jack's Place's well-loved menu items, the BBQ Chicken Steak with Baked Potato holds a special place. The dish combines the smoky richness of grilled chicken with the soft, buttery goodness of a classic baked potato — a comforting pairing that resonates with diners across generations. Inspired by this signature item, the CYS team recently set out to cook their own version right in the office pantry.
From Pantry to Plate
Preparation began with careful ingredient selection:
Fresh chicken thighs were marinated in a blend of barbecue sauce, spices, and a hint of sweetness, emulating the flavours Jack's Place has perfected over time
Baked potatoes were wrapped in foil and roasted until fluffy on the inside with a golden, crisped skin
The simple act of preparing these elements together created a warm, communal atmosphere — and as the aroma filled the office, staff began gathering, eagerly awaiting their feast.
More Than Just a Meal
Cooking together did more than satisfy appetites. It sparked nostalgic conversations about family celebrations, childhood weekend dinners, and early experiences at Jack's Place outlets across Singapore. This shared history mirrors the restaurant's own story of growth — expanding from its first pubs and early suburban locations into a well-established chain cherished by families for generations.
When the final plate was assembled — grilled chicken glazed with barbecue sauce, paired with a steaming baked potato topped with butter and optional sour cream — the result was something that felt both familiar and earned. The CYS team enjoyed every bite, appreciating not just the food, but the meaningful process behind it.
Food That Connects
Bringing a taste of Jack's Place into the office was a reminder of how food connects people, preserves memories, and celebrates heritage. And just like the restaurant itself, this simple meal created lasting moments worth cherishing.
